Intended Purpose and Audition
This is intended to encourage Information technology professionals and aspiring It professionals in their journeying to obtain Microsoft's summit career certifications. As well as explicate how an ambitious fast-track approach to certifications can be advantageous in a apace changing technological world. I hope this is informative for this audience and although our specific specializations, goals, or certifications may vary I intend this to be broadly benign for the process of becoming certified. I am going to give a cursory history of my certification path and give detail on my recent 90-day journeying including the timeline, resources, report habits, and general advice from my experience. Keep in mind the certifications and their requirements are subject to modify subsequently the time of me posting this commodity, so be sure to reference Microsoft'southward web site direct as you take your journeying. Delight feel free to annotate any questions you have below. Yep, I did include a motion-picture show of a Mac above to avoid partiality or vendor lock on this article.
UPDATE: New post on recertification here.
Personal Back Story
My name is Ben Jones and I accept been an IT professional person since 2006 primarily working in the SMB market place. To give a brief overview of my certification career, I obtained my Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification inside my start year. I started studying to obtain Microsoft certifications in 2011 and passed the beginning exam in the MCSA track subsequently about six months of studying, but then decided I ought to expect until they update the curriculum for the upcoming Windows Server 2012. I focused in on condign a VMware Certified Professional person (VCP) in Datacenter Virtualization (VCP-DV to be specific) and obtained that certification by January 2013. Since renewing my CCNA was upon me in 2013 I decided to get deeper and obtain my Cisco Certified Design Associate (CCDA) certification to gain more than understanding of network pattern concepts and principles equally the software defined network is a hot topic nowadays. I obtained my CCDA on June 18, 2013, and on June 19th I decided to return to my ambitions of obtaining distinguished Microsoft certifications now that they changed the acronyms dorsum to suite their dearest predecessor MCSA and MCSE with some slight linguistic modifications to their definitions.
Timeline
So, June 19th was day 1 on this journey to obtain my MCSA Windows Server 2012, MCSE Server Infrastructure, and MCSE Private Cloud in 90-days. Although, when I began I would not accept believed it would happen and so speedily.
MCSA: Windows Server 2012
The offset step was passing the 70-410, lxx-411, and lxx-412 exams every bit they are the prerequisites for all merely two MCSE certifications. In regards to my gear up and conquer days it took me xx days to pass the 70-410, 14 days for the 70-411, and 14 days for the lxx-412. Which equates to MCSA in 48 days. Which although doesn't accept the same ring to it every bit MCSA in 90 days, which was my goal, I was well pleased.
MCSE: Server Infrastructure
The next step for me was passing the seventy-413 and the seventy-414 exams to earn my MCSE Server Infrastructure certification. I passed the 70-413 in 7 days and the lxx-414 in 14 days.
MCSE: Private Cloud
Finally, I aimed to pass the lxx-246 and 70-247 to earn my MCSE Private Deject certification. I passed the lxx-247 outset in fourteen days and the 70-246 in 7 days. Thus, my 90-day certification track was completed. However, this is totally irrelevant if you don't go along reading.
Motivation
There are a myriad of reasons to go Microsoft Certified, merely I am but going to share my motivation and conventionalities equally to why this is a valuable path and why I believe approaching information technology diligently is the fashion to go. The primary motivation for me is it adds measurable valuable to me equally an Information technology professional. Information technology adds this value not but because I take the certification, only because I take demonstrated that I intendance about the technology plenty to spend my fourth dimension diving into the basics and bolts of it. I accept demonstrated that although technology moves quickly I intend to keep up. It is measurable because there are studies showing that people will relevant IT certifications get raises, chore opportunities, and tend to become picked over the 1 who doesn't take them when applying for a task. Now, to those that practice the bare minimum to pass the exams there actually is no intrinsic value for the certification they obtain. Because, the certification is not a argument that you tin pass a series of tests, just a statement that you know the content and accept the skills necessary to perform on-the-job. Faking information technology until you brand it may or may not work, but I strongly encourage you to invest the time to really learn the cloth and have confidence that you are the adept you work to become.
The Fast-Runway
That all aside, the diligent fast-track of certification versus the slow-paced certification method. I adopt the fast-runway when it comes to certifications and it has worked well for me. The fast-track certification method is where you lot ready aggressive goals to learn the cloth and pass the exams and dedicate as much fourth dimension as you can make available to accomplish those goals. For me it meant communicating with my family the value of what I was doing and giving them an expectation of how long it will take me. You lot want to take their back up as you lot swallow precious time to practise this. People are naturals at procrastinating and spare time is rarely just discovered, simply more often it is allocated and planned for. I allocated an hour before work, most of my lunch hours, an hour each night, and 2 to 4 hours on the weekend. Some mornings I am also tired, some lunches I demand a suspension, and some evenings I don't desire to suspension abroad from time with family and friends. Withal, I am intentional about studying. The fast-track isn't intended with the sole purpose of getting done quickly, but being intentional and not dragging out the duration unnecessarily.
Another reason I am advocating the fast-track to certification is that Microsoft and other vendors are going to an almanac product release cycle, and if you lot accept too long learning one product version past the time you are done you lot are already behind.
Connect and Contribute
I highly encourage anybody on the certification journey to get social and contribute your feel. I would start by getting connected to experts in your subject. For the MCSE Server Infrastructure and MCSE Private Deject paths I recommend some of the post-obit people to follow in no particular order:
- @MSLearning
- @MSCloud
- @WindowsServer
- @hypervserver
- @MPNTraining
- @MS_SystemCenter
- @CBTNuggets
- @joe_elway, Aidan Finn, Hyper-V MVP, Individual Cloud, writer
- @KeithMayer, Senior Technical Evangelist at Microsoft for Individual Cloud
- @ThomasMaurer, Thomas Maurer, Microsoft MVP, System Center
- @JamesvandenBerg, James Van Den Berg, Microsoft MVP, System Center
- @concentratdgreg, Greg Shields, CBT Trainer
- @concentrateddon, Don Jones, CBT Trainer
Connect with people on the forums and on Twitter. In that location are a lot of people on Twitter with informative posts, and then follow the ones above and search for relevant posts on Twitter and follow people who are talking about what matters to yous as you report. If you want to share more yous tin can fifty-fifty start your own web log. Don't exist afraid to enquire questions forth the fashion. I take been encouraged by all of the feedback and back up I take received forth the way from the online community.
Process
I developed a method that worked well for me and I know this will not work the same for everyone, and so I hope you will glean from this whatever you believe will work in best for you and the procedure you define. I am going to outline the procedure I take and include links to the resources in the side by side department that volition be exam specific.
Gathering Information
I start past gathering the exam objectives and resources available into OneNote, where I accept a page created for each exam. I proceed to work off of this throughout my studying. I go to the page specific for the exam on Microsoft learning and essentially copy and paste the "Skills Measured" section into my OneNote page. I then expect to see what "Training Options" are available and try to go a good list of what resources I need to purchase and shop links to all of that in my OneNote page. Again, details on resource is in the next section.
Once I have my OneNote populated with the examination objectives and the available resource. I make tentative notations on sections that I demand hands-on experience with, topics that are completely new to me, and ones I feel similar I already take a grasp on. You can highlight them, take notes, whatsoever makes sense to y'all hither. I do this and then I have my priorities.
Reading
I then plow to the books available, if there is whatever, and will read through the volume (my first time non using the printed books and using the Kindle versions). I don't study the book in depth and piece of work off of information technology, but I only read information technology through and make simple notes in my OneNote as something catches my attention. This works with theses exams considering it is non simply memorizing the data and tables as much as information technology is agreement the concepts and principles, and beingness able to actually do what you learn. So, the value I find in reading the books is getting the overview.
Video Grooming
I then go to the video training on CBT Nuggets and get-go the series. Sometimes in that location is a walkthrough on setting upward your lab environment for the series, and other times I just look alee to see what I will demand and tin can reproduce in my lab. The video training series I attempt to treat as if I am in a classroom environment just with command, so I have notes constantly, break and dig deeper with online resources when I feel that I haven't quite got something withal, etc. For the most office watching the video series and post-obit forth in my lab is where about of my nearly profitable study happens.
Filling in the Gaps
Once I made it through I will look over my notes and make certain in that location isn't an expanse in the exam objective that I haven't covered thoroughly and have conviction in. If there is I either scout the video for that area again, detect other online videos, TechNet manufactures, blog articles from manufacture experts, or try to simulate information technology in my lab.
Practice Tests
The final written report method is the practice tests. This is to primarily get the feel of taking what you accept learned and working through questions. I will reference some exercise tests below, merely I typically used the exercise questions in the books. If you accept never taken a Microsoft test before, they have some examination format and question type video clips that assistance you see what the examination is similar. When going through the exercise tests exist sure to use your troubleshooting skills to eliminate answers and narrow downwards the possibilities. Attempt to simplify the question downwards as much as you tin can and be sure to know what details need to exist considered. If i is pain your head and holding you up just mark it for review and come dorsum to information technology. You should be able to meet how many questions are on the test and how much time yous are given to accept them. With this information you can make up one's mind how much time yous can spend on each question. Exist certain that yous are practicing timely question taking during your do.
Test Mean solar day
On to the day before the test. For me, I go over all of my notes and endeavour to draw it back to retention. A final fill in the gap moment where I may await up some things or become dorsum in my lab to run across something 1 more time. I will go over my practise questions a lot to just exist in test style.
Now, it is on to test day. Remember to bring the necessary forms of identification as outlined past your testing site, and only follow their instructions overall. I prefer taking my tests in the morning time after an hour of final study, breakfast, and coffee. I recommend picking the time you lot experience that your brain will be the most set to become at information technology. Forenoon is typically the nigh productive for me, and information technology prevents me from getting involved mentally in some work project prior to the test. Don't attempt to practise a panic cram every bit that volition just stress you out. Simply comprehend the high points to remind yourself you are ready. Be confident. Relax. Listen to some music that you studied to or tin relax to on the way to the testing center. Stay calm. As you begin your test remember the methods you used to go through the do questions and continue information technology hither. Mark difficult questions or ones that you aren't sure well-nigh for later review. Draw out topologies or things that will assistance you get a visual on challenging questions. Keep the pace you lot expert and don't get discouraged past questions yous don't know. During review there volition be some you only don't know, but continue to endeavor to eliminate options that don't apply. Before I striking the final end the test selection I see how many I checked for review, the ones I wasn't confident in, and I attempt to run across if half of those were wrong would I more often than not have a passing score. Typically this is 700 out of k, and although it isn't as elementary as getting seventy% of the questions right because some are weighted differently I however apply that method hither to get a general idea if I should review one more time before ending the exam. Hopefully at this point you passed! Regardless of pass or fail be sure to use the sheet they gave you to measure out your performance on different sections and fill in the gaps where you could have done better. On to the resource.

From what I have read information technology looks like the changes are pocket-size and you will just want to know what's new and what has changed in 2012 R2. Exist sure to expect to the forums for that examination when information technology gets closer to 2014. I believe most press books will be coming out in Jan 2014 for MCSA and Apr 2014 for MCSE as stated on Amazon. I wouldn't delay in preparing for the tests considering of these changes, as information technology will be the new normal and variations and changes should exist smaller than previous shifts. Use my links as a guide, merely always do some looking around on your ain for changes that occur.
*For more information at that place is a Microsoft video update that was made on September 23, 2013.
My Lab Environment
I recommend setting up a lab surroundings so that you can get some easily-on experience with each topic. In that location are so many ways to accomplish this, but I am just going to share what I did and recommend. I congenital a standing lab environment from the offset of my first examination to the stop of my second MCSE certification.
The Platform
I used a laptop with a 256GB SSD for the OS and a 256GB SSD for my virtual machines, 16GB of RAM, and a CPU with 8 logical processors. I recommend at least having one SSD and patience, but ii is preferred.
I accept built similar labs on a Mac and a PC. I recommend VMware Fusion for the Mac and VMware Workstation for the PC. I started my lab on Hyper-5 because I wanted to immerse in the Microsoft fashion, simply concluded upwardly starting over with VMware environment when I realized I couldn't create a Hyper-5 server within Hyper-Five (nested Hyper-V virtual motorcar). New: I found an article where someone was able to install Hyper-V on Hyper-V using Windows ADK which may save you coin from buying something like VMware Workstation if yous already are using Windows viii.
The Network
That said, the first matter I did was setup a Brocade virtual router so that my environment would exist more production like, accept multiple subnets and then I could setup multiple Advertising sites, VPNs, etc. Brocade makes the Vyatta router freely available and is very similar interface and process of setting up a Cisco router. Yous tin download the ISO here:
http://www.vyatta.com/downloads/vc6.6/vyatta-livecd_VC6.6R1_i386.iso Although, y'all may want to get the latest version from their site. To setup the router download the ISO, create a VM with 256MB of RAM, a 5GB VHDX, 1 CPU, and at to the lowest degree 2 NICs to start. The showtime NIC should exist connected to the Internet shared connexion for your WAN and the 2nd interface should be continued to a private network that I would create. This private network will be the network for your lab virtual machines. You will be setting the router to have an IP address on this network and it will exist the default gateway for your virtual machines. To set it up, boot the VM to the ISO, login with user and password "vyatta", run the "install image" command to install it to the VHDX (only enter through the prompts). And so yous tin can follow the steps of this article to setup a dynamic IP address and NAT for the outside interface, assign a static IP accost to the within interface, and you are good to go. http://xmodulo.com/2012/10/how-to-fix-upwards-dhcp-and-nat-on-vyatta.html
Licensing
In regards to Windows licensing I was fortunate enough to have a Premium MSDN subscription, and an expiring TechNet subscription to use, but if you don't have that do good I recommend using Microsoft's evaluation software that they offer gratuitous for 180-days.
- Windows Server 2012 Evaluation
- Windows viii Evaluation
The 180-24-hour interval expiration is a good encouragement to movement chop-chop to condign certified!
The Base Servers
I then deployed a Windows Server 2012 domain controller and setup the Active Directory Domain Services, DNS, and DHCP roles. I likewise recommend setting up a secondary domain controller with the same roles to get experience with that. I would promote it, setup failover with DHCP, practice moving the chief FSMO roles around between the ii, and then demote and decommission 1. You actually merely need one for the lab since resources will be limited, but I think the feel here is crucial.
I recommend setting upwards a Windows 8 direction computer that you volition install the Remote Server Assistants Tools (RSAT) on and so y'all can do about of your management from hither. Requite this VM more processor and RAM and limit the others as much as possible.
Yous can then setup servers every bit necessary with the CBT Nugget material. I review what will be covered and try to take what I need setup. When it gets into setting up System Center in the Private Cloud it gets a fiddling complicated and you desire to consolidate as much every bit possible. Here is a blog that has some good walkthrough articles on setting up your System Middle lab. http://adinermie.wordpress.com/
Honestly, likewise much direction on your lab would have away from the learning experience. Some trial and error is good for learning the almost valuable things. If you take questions please get out a comment on the post and I would be glad to talk y'all through your lab setup.
General Resource
Microsoft OneNote
An excellent digital notebook for compiling all of the objectives, notes, helpful screenshots, lab configurations, etc. If you don't accept the paid desktop version, no problem. Sign upward for an Outlook.com account and access SkyDrive to create a new OneNote notebook.
CBT Nuggets
I recommend a subscription to CBT Nuggets IT Training for $99/month during the time of your study. You can view the first two minutes of each video to go a preview. This may be something your employer will invest in, as it does provide lots of content that could exist helpful non just to you but to your colleagues. Regardless, I believe this is the near helpful component I had in my study resource. If y'all buy a year for $999 y'all as well get the Transcender practice tests which is about $110 per examination value.
Microsoft Exam Experience
Microsoft has a page with some video clips to evidence you how the exam look and feel volition be if you lot have never taken a Microsoft exam before.
Registering for the Exam
The Prometric Microsoft testing web site where yous tin detect a examination middle and sign-upward for your examination. If y'all already accept an MCP ID be sure that information technology is associated with the account y'all use to schedule your exam at Prometric.
